I just released a new piece, Riparian Reverie, for harp and string orchestra. It is lyrical and flowing, grade 3, and runs just over four minutes.
The harp opens it alone and returns to the spotlight at key moments. But it stays woven into the ensemble rather than out front as a soloist. Every section gets a turn with the melody.
The story behind it is my favorite part. Riparian Reverie was commissioned by Dr. Christie Blute as a gift in honor of her daughter, who played harp for the Gregory School Advanced Orchestra in Tucson, Arizona for seven years. Over that time she filled in missing parts and helped grow the program from a small group into the ensemble that premiered this piece.
Writing it was a real collaboration with the students. They shared ideas and feedback along the way. They even chose the title, inspired by the riparian area just outside their classroom.
Three editions are up now. A PDF download, a print-and-ship set, and a source-files package with the Dorico project, MusicXML, and MIDI if you want to adapt it for your own players. Everything is on the page: https://mattrileymusic.com/riparian-reverie
If it fits one of your groups, I would love to hear it performed.
