It Is Well With My Soul, Now for Full Orchestra

I just added a new version of It Is Well With My Soul. This one is for full orchestra with two solo violins, and it is the largest setting of this hymn I have written.

It opens quietly. Two solo violins carry the melody over a still piano, and the orchestra comes in by degrees. The strings warm underneath, the winds add color, and the brass open the texture as the line climbs. The whole piece is one long arc to a single climax near the end, and it stays reverent the whole way through. It runs about four and a half minutes at a slow, steady tempo.

The scoring is full but never heavy. You get two flutes, clarinet, two horns, two trumpets, two trombones, timpani, suspended cymbal and bass drum, glockenspiel and mark tree, piano, two solo violins, and full strings. There is also an alternate Violin III part in treble clef that can cover the viola line if you need it. The download includes the conductor score, every part, and editable source files in Dorico, MusicXML, and MIDI.

This full orchestra version lives inside the Ultimate Director's Suite. More on that below.

Here is the whole lineup for this piece, from one violinist up to a full orchestra. Pick the one that matches your group.

Soloist Suite ($39)

This is everything a single violinist needs for a service, memorial, or funeral. You get the solo violin sheet music in three difficulty levels: an early intermediate original, a late intermediate version with more ornamentation, and an advanced version. It also comes with piano accompaniment in late intermediate and advanced, plus an advanced alternate where the piano carries the melody and the violin plays countermelodies.

You also get performance tracks. These are recorded stereo MP3s with the solo violin removed, so you can play along. There are two piano tracks and orchestral versions featuring members of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra. The tracks match every sheet music version. Reference demo recordings for all versions are included too, so you can hear how each one should sound before you play it. WAV files are available on request.

Ensemble Suite ($69)

The Ensemble Suite has everything in the Soloist Suite and adds small ensemble arrangements. You get two violins sheet music in intermediate and advanced, a violin, viola, and piano arrangement, and a violin, cello, and piano arrangement. Each comes with complete parts for every player. The piano accompaniments, alternate versions, performance tracks, and reference recordings all carry over from the Soloist Suite. If you lead a small group, this is the most complete option for you.

Ultimate Director's Suite ($294)

This is the full orchestral archive, built for conductors and directors who want every option in one place. It includes every orchestral arrangement of the piece, from solo violin and strings all the way up to full orchestra.

Inside you get solo violin and string orchestra in all three levels, two violins and string orchestra in intermediate and advanced, the new full orchestra and two solo violins version, and a rhythm section ensemble with two violins, piano, electric bass, percussion, and string orchestra. It also comes with multitrack audio stems, the individual WAV files like click, bass, piano, and strings, so you can mix your own backing tracks.

The part most pros care about is the source files. You get editable Dorico, MusicXML, and MIDI for every version, with Finale files for select versions. That means you can transpose, adapt, and rework any part for your exact group. This is the only place to get the full orchestra version.

Single Parts ($10 each)

If you already own a Soloist or Ensemble Suite and just want to add a color, you can order single parts from the orchestral scores. Think a flute, a trumpet, or a percussion part. Parts are available for every instrument in the full orchestra and rhythm section arrangements. You pick the quantity, list the instruments you want in the note to seller at checkout, and I email the PDFs within a day. Clarinet and trumpet parts include both transpositions at no extra charge. These parts are meant to go with a Suite. On their own they do not include the solo violin, piano, tracks, or scores.

Where to get it

Everything can be found here. If you want the full orchestra version, look for the Ultimate Director's Suite. If you are not sure which suite fits your group, start with what you have in the room, whether that is one violinist, a small ensemble, or a full section, and work up from there.
